Shang Sumdo to Lartsa is mostly ascending up along the deep river gorges with strange landscapes to see. The high mountain peaks are touching the azure at horizon. And finally after ascending all these height, the camp at the base of Gongmarula (5130m) is reached.
From Lartse the trek is steep ascending up the Gongmaru La (5130 m). When you are at the top of the Gongmarula, you will surely enjoy the beautiful views of the Shang Valley, Karakoram Ranges and the Markha surrounded by mountain ranges. The descent down isn't so steep and the trail runs along the left side of the valley. You would approach camp after an hour.
From the camp, start ascending up towards the base camp. The ascending is not tough and the camp is not very far. The base camp is in a small valley just before the peak where you would be served lunch on your arrival.
Early morning, we would start ascending summit. The ascending up is quite tough and a bit technical as you climb towards the top. As you reach the peak, you will surely enjoy the unimaginable views that surround the peak from the top. You would see the deep Markha valley beneath, the Stok ranges and the Zanskar ranges that become bold as they ran towards Rubsho. The descent to Nimaling is not as easy as calk walk and one should follow the instructions of the guide to avoid mishap.
After breakfast, gently climb along the mountain trail, and then follow the route to Gongmaru- La. (5150mtrs.). Long and steep descent down into the deep river gorge make you reach Chu-skurmo from where the camp at Shang Sumdo is one hour walk.
After breakfast, follow the trail along the riverbed leading towarsd the motor able road. Leaving a small house and then series of Chortens, you will reaches Martselang village on the bank of river Indus. Trek concludes as you move into a valley surrounded by beautiful snowy mountain amidst lies the Hemis monastery. On the way back to Leh one gets opportunity to see Thiksey, and Shey monastery.
